How this calculator works
Take-home pay is gross salary minus federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, state income tax, and your pre-tax deductions. Federal income tax is computed by subtracting the 2026 standard deduction (16,100 for single filers, 32,200 for married filing jointly) and applying the seven 2026 brackets. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to the 184,500 wage base. Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% above 200,000 for single filers.
Pre-tax retirement contributions reduce income tax but not Social Security or Medicare. Section 125 benefits such as health premiums reduce both. State tax follows each state's own standard deduction, exemptions, and rate schedule as described on the state's page. Local income taxes are not included.
This is an estimate. Your employer's withholding will differ based on your W-4, and your year-end liability depends on credits and deductions this tool does not model. See the methodology for every assumption.
